Answer 2_5_5

An electric locomotive is pulling a train at a constant speed of 30 m/s.  The train has a rolling resistance of 100 kN.

(a) What force must the locomotive produce?  Explain your answer.

It must pull with a force of 100 000 N because the forces are balanced.  (We will explore this more when we look at Newton's Laws)

(b) What power does it develop?

Power = force x speed = 100 000 N x 30 m/s = 3 000 000 W = 3 x 106 W =

3 MW
