Left hand diagram

tan q = opposite = 6/12 = 0.5

            adjacent

=> q = tan^-1 0.5 = 26.6^o

Right hand diagram:

tan q = 24/12 = 2.0 

=> q = tan^-1 2.0 = 63.4^o

Note that when you use the tan function, you can get values of greater than 1.  In fact tan 90^o is infinity.
