Physics is very much in the news as I write this. The big story is that data suggest that
neutrinos are travelling fractionally faster than the speed of light.
This has rather put the cat among the pigeons, making physicists
question Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Professor Jim Al-Khalili is
some what sceptical; he has announced that if the result is correct, he
will eat his boxer shorts on television. The photoelectric effect did exactly the same to Physics one hundred years ago; light was a wave and that was that. Or was it? Quantum Physics explains many things that Classical Physics cannot. Many everyday electronic devices depend on quantum physics, e.g. charge-coupled devices in a digital camera, or the light emitting diode. Particle Physics continues to capture the imagination. |
