Some companies have moved away from robotic assembly lines.  Give two reasons why this may have happened.  Explain the role that computer would still play in the company's manufacturing procedures.

Robotic assembly lines have disadvantages:

• Machinery is complex and expensive;
• Machinery has to be carefully maintained.
• Very precise programming is needed to ensure that the machines do the precise operation at the precise place that it is required.
• Computer failure can cripple production.

Role of the computer in manufacturing:

• CAD - design work;
• CAM - computers control machining operations under the eye of a skilled operator.
• Database will enable accurate stock control, so parts are available.

These kinds of question seem rather waffly.  Do not reply with waffle as the marking points are quite precise.  Look at the question and try to dissect the points it is after; in this case it is looking for disadvantages of robotics, and the role of the computer in manufacturing.

Avoid answers like "it gives the workforce more pride in the job", as this is not really focusing on the role of ICT.
